Trump accounts overview

October 28, 2026

Since July 2026, employers have been able to make voluntary contributions to Trump accounts — sometimes referred to as 530A accounts — for employees’ dependent children. Created by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, these accounts are a new type of tax-preferred savings vehicle for individuals under age 18. Employer contributions of up to $2,500 per year are excluded from an employee’s gross income if made under a program that satisfies certain conditions. The tax exclusion also applies to employer contributions made to accounts established for employees under age 18. Employers may also offer employees the option to fund Trump accounts for their dependent children — but not for themselves — through pretax contributions under an Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 125 cafeteria plan.

This updated slide presentation explains the rules governing Trump account contributions, investments, and distributions, and reflects guidance issued by the IRS and Department of Labor. It also summarizes recently issued IRS temporary regulations addressing the general requirements for establishing Trump accounts, including Treasury’s automatic enrollment of eligible individuals beginning October 1, 2026.
