May 6: Remember to Thank a Nurse
This year, National Nurses Day (May 6) is occurring in the midst of a global pandemic. If there was ever a time to acknowledge and celebrate the more than 4 million registered nurses across the nation, it’s now! Nursing is the nation’s largest healthcare profession and RNs are routinely amongst the most highly regarded professions in the country.
Nursing is comprised of roles ranging from direct patient care and case management to supporting quality procedures and directing complex nursing care systems. Nurses work in clinical settings such as hospitals and long-term care as well as administrative settings such as insurance carriers and consulting.
The federal government projects that more than 200,000 new registered nurse positions will be created each year from 2016-2026. Growth in the RN workforce will occur for a number of reasons, including an increased emphasis on preventive care; growing rates of chronic conditions, such as diabetes and obesity; and demand for healthcare services from the baby-boom population, as they live longer and more active lives.
Thank you to all the RNs, including our own Mercer RNs who work alongside our other clinicians, including physicians and clinical social workers, to provide consulting expertise in selecting and optimizing clinical management programs. Make a note in your calendar to thank an RN on May 6!
