States, cities tackle COVID-19 paid leave

February 15, 2023

This GRIST provides brief summaries of state and local COVID-19 paid leave requirements, as well as guidance addressing how existing paid leave benefits apply during the pandemic. While many COVID-19 leave mandates have expired, some remain in place.

The latest updates cover California’s workplace COVID-19 prevention regulations, which replace emergency regulations and no longer require paying excluded workers. COVID-19 supplemental paid sick leave requirements end on Feb. 15 for the city of Los Angeles and on Feb. 21 for Long Beach, CA. Similar mandates under California state law and in New York City expired at the end of 2022, and in October 2022 in Washington state and Washington, DC. Some jurisdictions still have COVID-19 leave requirements in place, including New York state, Los Angeles County and Oakland, CA.
