Are You Getting in Seven Hours of ZZZs a Night?

You probably heard about the new study reporting that individuals in their 50s and 60s who sleep less than 7 hours per night are at an increased risk of developing dementia. And, it probably made you think about your own sleep hygiene. But did you also wonder about the sleep habits of your employees?
The National Sleep foundation reports that adults under the age of 65 need 7-9 hours of sleep per night, yet over one-third of working adults report sleeping six or fewer hours per night. Those with severe insomnia are seven times more likely to have a work-related injury. Sleep disorders and resulting fatigue can be a significant economic burden on employers. Check out the National Safety Council’s Fatigue Cost Calculator for employers to get an estimated impact of sleep deprivation on your workforce. There are a number of sleep solutions in the market – BetterNight, Sleepio, SleepMed and Somni to name a few – that can help you target sleep issues in your employee population for improved health and decreased absences and presenteeism, not to mention the long-term benefits to your employees’ brain health.
