S&P 1500 Pension Funded Status Increased 1 Percent in January
United States, New York
The estimated aggregate funding level of pension plans sponsored by S&P 1500 companies increased by 1 percent in January 2024 to 108 percent as a result of an increase in discount rates and equity markets. As of January 31, 2024, the estimated aggregate surplus of $125 billion USD increased by $7 billion USD as compared to a surplus of $118 billion USD measured at the end of December according to Mercer,1 a global consulting leader and a business of Marsh McLennan (NYSE: MMC).
The S&P 500 index increased 1.59 percent and the MSCI EAFE index increased 0.54 percent in January. Typical discount rates for pension plans as measured by the Mercer Yield Curve increased from 4.99 percent to 5.11 percent.
“Pension funded status for the S&P 1500 rose one percent in January driven by a solid month for US equities and rising interest rates,” said Matt McDaniel, a Partner in Mercer’s Wealth Practice. “Interest rates clawed back slightly after falling off to end 2023 as the market awaits the Fed’s next move on interest rates. Risk transfer activity remains strong as companies continue to take advantage of the recent increases in pension funded status. Plan sponsors should continue to monitor equities and interest rates closely and be poised to act quickly on future funded status movements.”
