Global mobility management has rarely evolved as quickly as it has in recent years. Mercer’s in-person Talent Mobility Conference returned to a very different world of work.

The conference offered a platform for international HR professionals from across Europe and beyond to learn, network and discuss the new horizons for management. Attendees joined us in Brussels to explore the challenges and opportunities emerging from today’s key trends in global workforce management, including:

  • Mobile talent’s new expectations and the rise of employee-driven work flexibility
  • The evolution of global reward strategies that influence international assignment compensation
  • Practical implications of international remote work
  • Workforce transformation and the shifting role of the mobility function within organisations
Three years ago, at our last in-person conference, no one could have imagined how much the world of work would change. We return to an in-person event in June 2023 to explore the new challenges and opportunities on the horizon for global mobility and HR professionals. I look forward to welcoming you in Brussels!

Mastering the basics — Assignee allowances: Cost of living, housing and quality of living/hardship

In the aftermath of the pandemic, geopolitical tensions in various regions have impacted the quality of living and housing rental in several locations around the world. Furthermore, inflation and exchange rate fluctuations directly influence the purchasing power of mobile employees. The rise of remote and flexible working has also caused many employees to reconsider their priorities, work-life balance and where they choose to live. This session provides a basic understanding of Mercer´s research methodology and explores the latest analysis, identifying important global trends in accommodation, cost of living and quality of living.

Speakers:

Slagin Parakatil, Global Product Owner, Mercer

Brigitte Ludwig, Principal, Mercer

Employers are increasingly concerned about the mental wellbeing of their expatriate employees. Mark Harris and Patricia Lopez explore two key issues related to this topic. In this session, they address the ongoing and accelerating impacts of the pandemic on mental wellbeing in an expatriate context as well as cutting-edge strategies employers are instigating to mitigate these effects.

The world of professional work has never experienced such drastic change in such a short space of time. Just as the threat of COVID-19 recedes, the new challenges of AI and ChatGPT arrive. And a new normal is here: hybrid work. To lay out the changes in their historical context and help us look ahead, Julia Hobsbawm, Bloomberg’s columnist on the future of work and the author of the acclaimed book The Nowhere Office: Reinventing Work and the Workplace of the Future, joins us to help navigate a path through all the challenges.

Speaker:

Julia Hobsbawm, Bloomberg commentator and columnist on the future of work

Choose one of four interactive sessions:

1. Hybrid assignments - From theory to practice

A corporate environment that provides no workplace flexibility or options for where and how employees would like to work is a thing of the past. Times have changed, and with the increasing number of employees’ and managers’ requests for more flexible work practices in recent years, companies worldwide are designing, testing and implementing new forms of workplace flexibility.

Because this topic is complex, it’s imperative to have a clear structure and uniform definitions — and then take bold actions. One sublayer of “working from anywhere” is hybrid assignments. In this session, discover how Volkswagen AG started its journey and how it’s piloting hybrid assignments in practice. What does Volkswagen’s approach look like? Curious to learn about their findings? Join this can’t-miss session to learn from Volkswagen AG and discuss and delve deeper into hybrid assignments with your peers.

Speakers:

Christian Block, Head of the Global Assignments Governance Team, Volkswagen AG

Julian Hansen, Tax Adviser, Volkswagen AG

Markus Kurth, Principal – Global Mobility, Mercer

2. The evolution of global rewards: what does it mean for employee compensation and global mobility?

The world of work is changing at an incredible pace, and how we reward and incentivise global workforces is also transforming rapidly. How does company culture and the prioritisation of ethical work initiatives impact an organisation’s approach to reward and benefits? How do we reward and incentivise changed ways of working (remote, hybrid etc.), especially in a high inflation environment? What does it mean to embed DEI principles into our HR and compensation structures on a global basis? What roles do Reward and Mobility play in enabling skills-based organisations? What responsibilities and opportunities do we have as employers to contribute to the well-being of employees and their families on a local and international basis?

Join the discussion between Sean MacHale, Mercer’s European Reward Practice Leader, and Kate Fitzpatrick, Global Mobility Practice Leader for the UK&I, to learn more about the latest Reward trends, and how these changes are impacting the future of Mobility.

Speakers:

Sean MacHale, Partner and Rewards Practice Leader, Europe, Mercer

Kate Fitzpatrick, Global Mobility Practice Leader, UK&I, Mercer

3. Transforming the mobility function to meet new challenges

Recent societal and economic changes, accelerated by the pandemic, pose major challenges and questions for global mobility. Does your organisation have the right policies and people as well as the right technology solutions to support what they need to deliver? Is your organisation and service delivery model fit for purpose?

This breakout session explores these questions and shows how RWE’s global mobility function responded to them. As RWE was forced to transform its business model from traditional energy production based on coal and nuclear power toward sustainable, ecofriendly energy production, HR and the global mobility function questioned its role in the organisation and found answers. Join Aeric Gangey, Head of RWE’s Global Mobility Hub, as he leads us through his journey toward a relatable mobility function. Discuss with your peers how they perceive the challenge of transforming the function and the solutions they’re considering.

Speakers:

Aeric Gangey, Head of Global Mobility Hub, RWE

Christof Ternes, Senior Consultant - Global Mobility, Mercer

Join us on the first day of our conference for a live session designed to maximise your networking opportunities with a deep dive into a few selected topics. This interactive session lets you participate in three different discussions on various issues. There’s time to change tables after each discussion, so be sure to make the most of this unique chance to connect with others in your field.

Day 2

Speakers:

Kim Abildgaard, Senior Partner, Career Europe Leader, Mercer

Yvonne Traber, Partner, Global Mobility Product Solutions Leader, Mercer

This panel session will explore how international mobility has evolved over the years and its changing role in the context of the growing complexity of the global workforce. The traditional approach of moving employees from one location to another is no longer sufficient for managing distributed international workforces on an ongoing basis. The employers now need to look at rightsizing and diversifying the international talent pool, fostering talent diversity, ensuring the right talent pipeline is in place and addressing key skill shortages in critical markets. This session will highlight the important role that HR and Mobility teams have to play in the global talent-brokering process and how they can bridge the gap between talent owners and business units to ensure that organisation have the right talent in the right place at the right time.

Speakers:

Christiane Grabow, Global Mobility Manager/Partner Manager, Siemens

Yvonne Traber, Global Mobility Product Solutions Leader, Mercer

Guillermo Gonzalez-Prieto, Global Mobility Leader, Cargill

Caroline Thorley-Farrer, Group Director, Global Mobility, Worley

Kate Fitzpatrick, Global Mobility Practice Leader, UK&I, Mercer

3. People, Planet, Profit: If Global Mobility is bad for the environment, disruptive to communities and costly to the organisation, why don’t we stop?

The war for talent, shareholder activism and corporate social responsibility are all driving sharper corporate focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. Employers are also looking to embed sustainability initiatives and ensure diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) within their people practices as well as their products and services. Given these concerns, together with purpose-led employment experiences, how do we ensure mobility doesn’t get left behind? Can we instead use mobility as a strategic lever to challenge norms and promote sustainable options that are good for the planet as well as for organisations and their people?

Speakers:

Michael Grover, Principal, Mercer

Johan de Kam, GM PhD Researcher, Teaching Fellow, University of Warwick

4. Transforming the mobility function to meet new challenges

Speaker:

Aeric Gangey, Head of Global Mobility Hub, RWE

Christof Ternes, Senior Consultant - Global Mobility, Mercer

Whether they identify as expats, remote workers or digital nomads, one thing is certain — employees’ expectations around international work has significantly changed over the past three years. While senior leaders and HR functions debate what the future of work will look like, talent is already flowing to the employers that are leading the way on truly flexible working. This session explores the latest Mercer research and client case studies on employee expectations about careers, mobility, and flexible working and how the mobility function, HR and leaders can respond.

Speakers:

Michael Eger, Partner, Mercer

Katerina Psychopaida, Partner, Practice of Employee Experience and Research, Europe and the UK, Mercer

Ask questions of the panel and leave with actionable ideas for addressing the future of cross-border workforce management in your organisation.
