In our conversation on The New Shape of Work, Angela Berg, Global Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Leader within Mercer’s Transformation practice, discusses the role men can play in breaking gender bias, how to equip men to participate in the DEI journey and how embedding DEI across all parts of the organisation can lead to competitive advantage.

The importance of men’s involvement in addressing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) issues is nothing new. With men still holding the majority of the positions of power in the global workforce, gender equality will simply not happen without their involvement. What is new in the last couple of years is a more intentional focus on bringing men into the conversation about gender equality versus calling them out. And not a moment too soon.

Interesting moments from the interview:

  • Highlight and address gaps in equities and inequalities

"It's essential that we highlight and call out where there are gaps in equities and inequalities, and lay bare the processes and the biases that have been contributing to them. But — at the same time — to be a productive partner in this journey, we've also got to ensure that men are very consciously equipped to productively participate in the journey."
  • Being an ally

"The purpose of being an ally is to help ensure that everyone is having the same positive kind of workplace experience — and the opportunity to thrive — in the workplace. It entails becoming aware of those moments where there are situations or conditions that can really damage inclusion, and becoming confident in how individuals can personally support others by standing up and by advocating when needed."
  • When people thrive, societies thrive

"Our evolving mantra over time has been that when people thrive, societies thrive. We're firm believers that employers can play a really critical role in delivering social justice through the channels they have to deliver workforce justice."
  • Equipping and training leaders to achieve workforce justice

"Leaders have to be at the forefront of the efforts to achieve workforce justice and the DEI journey; that's just the same as it would be for any other critical business priority. And it's important to understand that you've got to really equip and train your leaders to successfully lead the journey for all the different stakeholders. It's not something that can happen by chance."
