Malaysia’s 2020 Budget Has Employment Implications

Employment highlights featured in Malaysia’s 2020 budget include:

  • The minimum wage will increase to RM1,200, up from RM1,100, for certain workers in major cities, to be named by the minister for human resources.
  • Maternity leave will increase from 60 to 90 days from 1 Jan 2021.
  • Revised procedures will apply for handling sexual harassment complaints, and individuals will have enhanced protection against sexual harassment.
  • New provisions will prohibit discrimination based on religion, ethnicity and gender.
  • Retirement provisions under the Employees Provident Fund will expand to include contract workers.
