Mercer announces senior hires to support growing client needs in the Midwest

Mercer has announced four senior additions to its Midwest Health & Benefits business in response to growing client needs in the region.

•       Jeff Smith, formerly with AonHewitt, has joined Mercer as a Principal and Senior Health & Benefits Consultant based in Chicago. In this role, he will consult to large employers on strategies to manage healthcare costs, to achieve improved employee health and productivity, and to capitalize on emerging changes in the employer-sponsored healthcare arena.

•       Tyler Harshey, most recently with Aetna, has rejoined Mercer’s consulting team in Chicago as a Principal and lead actuary for the Mercer Marketplace Group Active Exchange solution in North America. In this position, he will provide actuarial support and analysis for potential and current Mercer Marketplace clients.

•       Matthew Rehmann, previously with Integrated Health Systems, has been named the Midwest Exchange Sales Leader, based in Milwaukee and Chicago. In this role, he will be responsible for implementing the client development strategy for Mercer Marketplace in the Midwest.

•       Rey Balcazar, a Principal in Mercer’s Employee Health & Benefits practice in Indianapolis, has assumed the role of Midwest Exchange Solution Leader. His responsibilities now include subject matter expertise, market education, sales pursuit support, contracting and ongoing client engagement for Mercer Marketplace in the Midwest.

Mr. Smith has more than 25 years of insurance and benefits consulting experience, most recently as a Senior Vice President and Senior Strategy and Design Consultant in Aon Hewitt’s Health & Benefits practice. Prior to his work with Aon Hewitt, he was with Prudential Insurance Company of America, where he was a Senior Group Underwriter. He graduated from Illinois State University with a BS degree in Finance.

Mr. Harshey has over 10 years of experience in actuarial consulting, seven of which he spent with Mercer (2005 to 2012). Prior to rejoining Mercer, Mr. Harshey spent two years as Director of National Accounts Actuarial at Aetna, where he was responsible for consulting firm relations from an actuarial perspective, providing private exchange actuarial support and managing healthcare reform. He graduated with a BS in Actuarial Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is also a member of the American Academy of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries.

Mr. Rehmann has more than 20 years of sales leadership experience, first with Automatic Data Processing and most recently with Integrated Health Systems, where he was the Vice President of Sales and Marketing. He received a BS degree in Business Administration, with a focus in Marketing and International Business, from Marquette University.

Mr. Balcazar has over 20 years of experience in sales, account management, carrier relations, international benefit programs, and full suite product and plan design. Prior to joining Mercer, he worked with large insurance companies including MetLife, Aetna, and Principal Financial Group. Additionally, he spent 10 years with a statewide PPO network. He received a BA degree in Liberal Arts from Wabash College, where he was an Eli Lilly Scholar, and he is currently working towards an MBA at Indiana Wesleyan University.
