Lord John Browne
Former CEO, BP
Lord Browne joined BP in 1966 as a university apprentice; between 1969 and 1983, he held a variety of exploration and production posts globally, and in 1984 was appointed Group Treasurer. He was Chief Financial Officer of the Standard Oil Company of Ohio during the BP/Standard merger of 1987, and served as Group Chief Executive of BP from 1995 until 2007. During that period, he created the world’s first supermajor through a series of mergers and acquisitions, including BP’s merger with Amoco in 1998. His landmark speech at Stanford University in 1997 established BP as a global leader in the way it thought about, and sought to address, climate change.
Lord Browne is independent co-Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Council on Science and Technology, Chairman of the Francis Crick Institute, a Fellow and past President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and Chairman of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and an Honorary Fellow of a number of institutions.
In 2007 he joined Riverstone, where he was co-head of the world’s largest renewable energy private equity fund until 2015. He is currently Chairman of BeyondNetZero, a climate growth equity venture established in partnership with General Atlantic. Lord Browne is Chairman of Wintershall Dea, Europe’s largest independent gas and oil company. He sits on the boards of IHS Markit and SparkCognition, and is Chairman of Pattern Energy, Stanhope Capital and Windward. Lord Browne is a member of the advisory boards of Edelman, Schillings, Blue Bear Capital, the Angeleno Group, Hyperloop TT, Kayrros and Loop Energy. He is an investor in numerous companies operating at the intersection of science, engineering, energy and climate change, including ChargePoint and Independent Energy Standards (IES).
He holds bachelor’s degrees in natural sciences from Cambridge and a master’s in business from Stanford.

Ian is the Chief Investment Officer of Royal Mail Pensions Trustees Limited and has over 20 years of investment experience. Having overseen their c.£30billion asset transfer to Government in 2012, he now manages investments totaling c.£16billion across 3 pension plans, including a c.$2.0billion alternatives programme. He is also a Trustee of the Rowland Hill Fund, a benevolent fund.
Before Royal Mail, Ian was an investment consultant for over a decade variously with Watson Wyatt (now Willis Towers Watson), LCP, KPMG and Morgan Stanley.
He read Mathematics at the University of Warwick and sat a good number of actuarial exams. He likes politics, winter sports, good humour and a cup of strong tea.

Mark has over 35 years of pensions investment experience. Having worked in a number of senior investment roles for Prudential/M&G for 24 years including being a trustee of the Prudential Staff Pension Scheme, Mark went on to be the CIO of the HSBC UK Pension Scheme (DB and DC) for over eight years. He now has plural investment roles in the pension world including working for UBS, M&G and Lloyds pension schemes.

Niall is a principal and a senior DC investment consultant at Mercer. His passion lies in working with defined contribution pension schemes to improve member outcomes and to make people’s lives more secure financially.
Niall joined the pensions industry in 2005 and advises on all key areas of defined contribution pension provision, focusing on investment strategy and investment governance. Prior to joining Mercer in March 2021, Niall was Head of DC at another investment consultancy and before that had a senior role in establishing an investment consultancy division for Willis in his hometown of Dublin. A qualified Actuary, Niall has spent time on the DC Advisory Board, the body responsible for forming and articulating the views of the actuarial profession on DC matters in the UK. He speaks frequently at conferences and is quoted in trade press.

Tony English is an Investment Consultant in Mercer's Wealth business and is based in London. Tony works with a variety of institutional investors for whom he is responsible for the provision of investment and risk management advice, including pension funds (corporate and local authority) and trust funds.
Tony has over 22 years of investment experience, having joined Mercer in 1999. During this time he has been involved in a wide variety of projects, including investment strategy, manager selections, private markets, ESG (including climate change) and pension risk transfer.
Tony graduated with a degree in physics from the University of Warwick. He is an Associate of the CFA Society of the UK ('CFA UK') and a regular member of CFA Institute. Tony represents Mercer on the Society of Pension Professionals' ('SPP') Investment Committee and is a council member of AIMSE Europe..
Senior Responsible Investment Specialist
Global Head of Sustainability Research
Sarika is a Principal in Mercer’s Wealth Business and Global Head of Sustainable Investment Research. She leads on building and expanding research coverage of SI investment strategies across asset classes including those aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, climate transition and other stewardship themes. She also leads on ESG research and integration across asset classes, working with other Manager Research boutiques to assess how asset managers are integrating ESG into their investment decisions. Sarika is a member of the Strategic Research Group and responsible for intellectual capital focusing on implementable solutions in sustainability themes.
Prior to joining Mercer in 2010, Sarika spent three years at RBC Wealth Management in London within the Advisory and Discretionary business groups. Previously, she spent two years as an equity research associate at Scotia Capital in Toronto, Canada, covering the Canadian Banks and Diversified Financials sectors.
Sarika holds an MBA from the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, and is a CFA charterholder.
UK Sustainable Integration Lead
Global Head of Investment Research
In her role as Global Head of Investment Research, Jo is responsible for manager research, responsible investment and strategic research worldwide. Within manager research she manages a group of more than 100 asset-class specialists across diversifying / liquid alternatives, fixed income and equities.
Jo sits on Mercer’s global leadership team for our Wealth business and chairs a number of our strategic and policy committees. She is also due to take over the co-chairmanship of the Investment Consultants Sustainability Working Group.
Jo was previously Chief Investment Officer for Mercer’s UK advisory team and European Strategic Director of Research, a role which in which she assumed responsibility for making sure that our diverse client base receives the best of our global research. Jo is also is an investment consultant for a small number of Mercer’s strategic clients.
Jo joined Mercer in 2002 from PwC’s actuarial practice and, after several years as an investment consultant in our Liverpool team, has held a number of client-focused and leadership roles. During 2017 Jo was DB Leader for our Liverpool office, where she was responsible for the integration and leadership of the legacy Investment and Funding teams as the Mercer Wealth business was formed. Jo was also Head of Public Sector, leading on the growth of our public sector business and managing strategic client relationships.
Prior to the integration of the investment and actuarial businesses in late 2016, Jo was a member of the leadership team managing Mercer’s UK Investment Business. Jo also established our successful Manchester Investments team in 2009.
Head of UK Client Relations, Investment Solutions
A partner within Mercer Investments, Helen is currently Head of UK Client Management within Mercer’s Investment Solutions division. Based in London, she is responsible for the retention of over 200 UK clients (including those in the pensions, E&F and insurance segments) and manages a team of 30 consultants across the UK. She is also involved in the leadership of the UK Investment Solutions business and wider UK Investments. In recent years, she has been involved in Mercer's responses to the CMA's review of the UK fiduciary and investment consulting industries as well as the re-tenders which were required to take place following this review.
She is also the lead consultant for a number of clients across the UK and Continental Europe that use Mercer's investment solutions. This includes clients ranging in size (up to £9bn) across a variety of industries and organisational set‑ups.
Helen has been with Mercer for over seventeen years. She holds a bachelor’s degree (with honours) in management studies from the University of Nottingham and is a CFA® charterholder.
DC Investment Consultant
Mick is a Principal Consultant at Mercer. He advises a portfolio of clients on their Defined Benefit and Defined Contribution arrangements, supporting them on aspects including the implementation and design, auto-enrolment, governance and communications.
Mick has extensive experience in M&A projects, including plan set-up, consolidation, and wind-up.
Mick is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. He also provides pro bono services to a well-known charity, sitting on their Pensions Steering Committee and their Remuneration Committee. Mick has an honours degree in Mathematics from the University of Oxford.
Mick lives in Warwickshire with his wife and two children. His hobbies include tennis, running and music.
Senior Real Estate Specialist, Europe
Anne is a real estate specialist in Mercer Alternatives, based in London. She joined Mercer in 2019 and has been working in the financial services industry, with a focus on real estate, since 2006.
Before joining Mercer, Anne spent most of her career at two real estate investment managers — LaSalle Investment Management and M&G Investments — where she worked in a research and strategy capacity. She started her career in the research team of real estate agency DTZ (now Cushman & Wakefield). Throughout her career, Anne has focused on real estate markets in continental Europe, gaining extensive expertise in this field. She participates in several industry bodies, including the Investment Property Forum, the Society of Property Researchers and the European Association of Non-Listed Real Estate Funds.
Anne focuses on researching real estate investment managers with pan-European portfolios, covering all investment styles. She delivers strategic real estate advice to Mercer clients and represents them at fund investor meetings.
Anne holds the Investment Management Certificate and a professional certification in data analysis from the London School of Economics (LSE). She holds a bachelor’s degree in geography and urban planning from the University of Amsterdam as well as a master’s degree from the London School of Economics.
Senior Real Estate Specialist, UK
Richard is a principal at Mercer Alternatives, based in London. He joined Mercer in 2020 and serves as a senior real estate specialist, where he is involved with investment management, research and due diligence efforts related to managers focused on a broad range of real estate strategies.
Richard has been in the financial services industry since 2004. Before joining Mercer, he worked at Aviva Investors, where he held roles in both the real estate fund management and strategy teams. Prior to that he worked in senior research roles at two of the UK’s leading real estate advisors.
Richard holds degrees from the University of Nottingham and the University College of Estate Management, Reading. He is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and holder of the IMC certificate.

Alexandra is a senior investment consultant in Mercer’s Investments business and is currently leading Mercer’s Responsible Investment Total Evaluation, an outcome-focused initiative for all asset owners. Alex has a real passion for mentoring the next generation of pension and investment professionals. She has more than eight years of experience in the industry.
Before joining Mercer, Alex worked within PwC’s and Aon’s investment businesses.

Craig has over 20 years of experience within the investment industry, beginning his career with Mercer in 1998. He advises a diverse portfolio of private sector pension clients and endowment & foundations. As the lead consultant, he has considerable experience in developing and implementing tailored journey plans and investment strategies for his clients. He provides investment advice across the broad range of asset classes available to institutional investors and is also experienced in advising on and implementing risk management hedging strategies.
Head of UK Investments
Dan is a partner and the UK Head of Mercer’s Investments business, where we help institutional asset owners achieve their investment goals by providing them with research, advice and solutions. He is responsible for developing and overseeing the execution of Mercer Investments’ growth strategy. Dan sits on Mercer’s Wealth Leadership Team and the Investment Solutions European Leadership Committee.
Dan has 25 years of experience in investment consulting, institutional asset management, hedge funds and business development, including 18 years at Mercer. He started his career with Mercer in New York in 1997 before transferring to London in 2000. During this time, he led the launch and development of Mercer’s UK Delegated Solutions practice from inception in 2006 through 2014. Before re-joining Mercer in 2020, Dan was Head of Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) at Putnam Investments, leading its institutional client development. Previously, he was Global Head of Consultant Relations at Winton Capital Management.
Dan graduated with honours from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana in the US and is a CFA® charterholder.
Ciara is a senior investment consultant within the Mercer Insurance Investment Team. Ciara has more than 10 years’ experience in the financial services industry. .Located in Dublin, Ciara is responsible for advising domestic and international insurance clients on a broad range of investment consulting issues. Ciara’s focus includes strategic asset allocation and portfolio risk monitoring combined with efficient portfolio construction and implementation.
Ciara joined Mercer in 2016. Prior to this, Ciara worked in the investment management industry in Ireland for 4 years and in the Economic division of the Central Bank of Ireland for 1 year. Ciara is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Character Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA). Ciara graduated from U.C.C. with a First Class Honours Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce in 2009. Ciara is also a Qualified Financial Adviser (QFA), Registered Stockbroker and a member of the Institute of Banking.
AMEA Chief Investment Officer, Investment Solutions
Niall is the CIO for MGIE. He is responsible for the design, implementation and ongoing management of Mercer Investment Management’s range of fund investment solutions in Europe, whether provided to multi-client funds, single-client funds or other implementation platforms. He is also responsible for the discretionary management services we provide to clients, such as DDS.
Niall joined Mercer from QED in Dublin, where he was a principal focusing on solution-driven investment opportunities with banks and insurance companies. Before this, he spent four years on the structured business desk at Bank of Ireland Global Markets, focusing on the delivery of derivative-based solutions. In this position, he developed and implemented the bank’s LDI product range and managed its suite of inflation-linked solutions. Niall has also worked with AIB Investment Managers and J Henry Schroder in the risk budgeting and structured derivatives areas, respectively.
Niall graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1997 with a gold medal and first class honours in mathematics. He was also a Scholar of the College. In 2002, he completed a Master of Science (with honours) from Dublin City University in investments and treasury management, where he finished in first place. He has also lectured part-time for the master’s programme at the Institute of Bankers in Dublin.

Rekha is an investment director on Mercer’s Global Alternatives Team. She entered the financial services industry in 1999 when she joined Mercer.
Rekha has held a number of roles during her time at Mercer. Before joining Mercer Alternatives, she was a member of Mercer’s Delegated Solutions practice, responsible for client service to investors in Mercer’s Private Markets Solutions. She also spent eight years as a senior business development consultant within the Delegated Solutions Team.
Rekha started her career with Mercer’s UK Investment Consulting Team, where she provided advice to a range of defined benefit and defined contribution pension clients on all aspects of asset investment.
Rekha has a degree in accountancy and financial management from the University of Sheffield and is a CFA® charterholder.

Sylvia is Mercer’s UK CEO and is a member of the Leadership Team for Mercer’s International region.
Sylvia’s career spans more than 30 years, with experience in the consulting industry (the insurer/asset management provider side) and a background in professional services.
Before joining Mercer in 2019, Sylvia spent six years at Prudential Financial, leading existing and developing new strategic C-suite partnerships at the global level. She was most recently the Senior Managing Director for Prudential Client Management. Before Prudential Financial, Sylvia spent 26 years at predecessor organisations of Willis Towers Watson. While there, she held leadership roles spanning its retirement business in multiple geographies, including leading the Towers Perrin pension de-risking business and the sales and marketing integration for Retirement North America following the Towers Perrin and Watson Wyatt merger.
Sylvia has a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Concordia University in Canada and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and an Enrolled Actuary under ERISA.
Senior Strategic Research Specialist
Matt is a senior investment research specialist for Mercer’s global Investments business. Located in Bristol, he is responsible for preparing white papers and other materials on a broad range of investment issues and has roles relating to portfolio construction and solutions. In addition, he specialises in researching alternative asset classes and thematic investment opportunities.
Before working as a researcher, Matt was a field consultant in Mercer’s Investment Advisory practice. In the past, Matt has written central advice on alternative indexation, frontier markets, the US elections, cryptocurrencies, ETFs, gold and commodities in general.
Matt graduated from Exeter University in 2003 with a master’s degree in bioinformatics. He also received an honours degree in biological sciences from St Catherine’s College, Oxford, in 2002.
Senior Investment Consultant
Steve is a Partner and Senior Investment Consultant, with 20 years’ experience, all with Mercer. He is lead advisor on a portfolio of eight private and public sector clients with a total of £31bn in assets under advisory, providing advice on all areas of investment. His clients span the risk / return spectrum. A number have heavily de-risked, focusing on liability risk management and generating secure cash-flows, whilst others remain open to future accrual, whose investment objectives are focused on generating long-term sustainable returns. Interesting projects that Steve has advised on recently include the introduction of small cap equity mandates, synthetic equities, equity protection strategies, private debt, renewable energy, and illiquid secure income mandates. He works with clients that have in-house investment teams, clients with UK-based and multi-national (US, German, Japanese) sponsors from a variety of sectors (including retail, banking, advertising, beverages, IT and the charity sector). He is a voting member on Mercer’s UK Equity, Property, Fixed Income and Global Macro manager ratings committees, and the UK Investment Ideas group.
