Countdown to Sept 15th – Important pension funding decisions

2 September

Document Download presentation

New funding rules under PPA coupled with uncertain and unprecedented times make it particularly difficult to develop the optimal pension funding policy. Sponsors of calendar-year plans can make voluntary contributions by September 15 to improve 2009 funded status, but how much is needed and what is the effect for future years? Funding relief is available for 2009, but 2010 contributions are expected to increase.

The slow pace of IRS guidance has not helped sponsors. We are now hearing informal comments from the IRS that final regulations will be released around Labor Day. The good news is that the guidance is expected to include some flexibility to help answer the open questions -- “how much to fund and for what plan years?”

HR effectiveness? Where do we start?

15 July

Document Download presentation

In today’s volatile, fast-changing economic environment, most companies are taking a closer look at their expenses, especially their HR expenses, to compete in the market and achieve their business objectives. The best way for an organization to reduce cost while minimizing damage to its long-term health is through “responsible restructuring”. Given that most organizations will ride through the current downturn, it is important that changes are recommended and implemented thoughtfully, and with a longer-term perspective.

How do we know if HR adds value to the business? How do we measure the effectiveness of the HR function? Through this one hour recorded webcast Mercer’s global and Asia Pacific HR effectiveness experts answer the above questions using a case study, describing how organizations can develop a very detailed analysis of their HR function and measure its effectiveness through a multiple lens perspective.

Beyond the cost in dollars, such a solution can help mitigate the risks associated with a rapidly changing regulatory environment.

Many plans will see these new rules for the first time in 2009, and depending on a plan’s exact funding level, restrictions could be applicable 1 April 2009.
