United Kingdom - the 2009 Budget set out a range of measures to increase the tax burden on individuals with income over £100,000 per annum. These start to come into effect in April 2010 and at a time when pay and benefits are under scrutiny, higher earners will experience a reduction in their net pay.

The proposals to change the basis of pension tax relief is particularly complex and for some will result in an extremely adverse cash flow position if the proposals are implemented in April 2011.

Whilst this is a personal taxation issue there are implications for pensions, benefits and reward which employers should be addressing:

• Is the compensation and benefit programme appropriate for higher earners?
• How do you balance the needs and circumstances of the individual in the context of the corporate strategy?
• What changes can be made to the compensation and benefit programme?
• What obligations are there for employers?
