Working with the New Zealand Superannuation Fund
The New Zealand Minister of Finance is required to undertake a review of the New Zealand Superannuation Fund (NZSF) at least every five years with the objective of determining how effectively and efficiently the Guardians of the NZSF are performing their duties.
Mercer was delighted to be selected by Treasury to undertake the first review of the fund since its inception, the results of which have been tabled in the NZ Parliament. We undertook to provide an opinion as to whether or not the Guardians were complying with global best practice investment management. Given the wide-ranging nature of the review, we put together a team that included, among others, specialists in strategy, private markets, operations, responsible investment and manager selection and was led by our global national funds Consulting team.

Working with Norway's Ministry of Finance
Mercer was engaged by the Norwegian Government Pension Fund to review the beliefs and practices of active management by other similar funds globally. As part of this wider review, Mercer also conducted research to undertake an assessment of the relationship between active ownership and active management for listed equities with a particular focus on whether and how investment style may impact the effectiveness of an active ownership strategy.
