Mercer’s Responsible Investment manager research encompasses three main areas:

• ESG research - Rating the integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into mainstream investment strategies;
  
  
• Sustainability-themed research - Rating RI ‘themed’ strategies that are targeted at ESG issues such as climate change, social issues and/or corporate governance.
  
  
• SRI manager research - Rating traditional socially responsible investments (SRI), such as screened products, ethical investments and other sustainable themes.

Research is carried out by Mercer's mainstream manager research team in conjunction with members of the responsible investment team, and is stored in Mercer’s Global Investment Manager Database (GIMD). We commenced this research in 2005, and have made a commitment to expand our rating process to include all mainstream strategies across all asset classes held in our  database, which potentially represents in excess of 30,000 strategies. 

In addition, we rate a wide range of sustainable and socially responsible investment (SRI) branded products, voting and engagement services, and ESG sector themed funds such as cleantech, clean energy and water funds. This research crosses traditional and alternative asset classes, and utilizes the Mercer 4-factor manager research framework as all other types of investment products, drawing on the experience of mainstream asset class specialists, as well as our global responsible investment specialists.
