Mercer’s 2008 US National Survey of Employer-Sponsored Health Plans, in its 23rd year, is now available. The survey found that total health plan cost per employee rose by 6.3 percent in 2008, approximately the same annual cost increase since 2005. To keep cost increases down, many employers -- especially small employers -- shifted cost to employees by raising deductibles. Employers expect a similar increase for 2009 – 6.4 percent -- but it remains to be seen whether their cost projections, provided in August and September of 2008, will hold in the face of the current global economic downturn.
