Now that Health Reform is passed, what do you do as an employer?

You are invited to a Mercer Seminar providing an update on Health Reform with a focus on the more immediate impact issues that may affect your plan for 2011.  Also, we will be covering some of the other important developments affecting employer sponsored health plans. These include The Mental Health Parity Act, COBRA, HIPAA, Form 5500 filing rules and the GINA law.

For example: Many employers made plan changes effective January 1, 2010 to comply with the Mental Health Parity Act, but did you know that the DOL released regulations on January 22, 2010 that will force many plans to make further changes for 2011?

Join us for a presentation that is designed to help you evaluate the important issues going forward, now that reform is here  while not forgetting the other important regulatory changes likely to affect your benefit plans for 2011 and beyond.

Higher Education Networking Event

Mercer will hold a Higher Education Networking Event on July 29, 2009.

This session is designed to:

  • Discuss the current state of health care reform
  • Share multiple perspectives on the reform debate (employers, consumers, insurers and providers)
  • Identify specific areas of opportunity and concern for higher education institutions
  • Create and communicate the higher education point of view

The recession has heightened awareness of the high cost of health care, our growing uninsured population and the shortfalls of our existing safety nets.

President Obama and several congressional leaders have vowed to move ahead with an ambitious restructuring of the health care system that will improve access to affordable health care to all Americans.

Changes will potentially impact every facet of the U.S. health care system. It's also possible that incremental changes will continue to be introduced as Congress weight the cost, priorities and impact of comprehensive reform.

It would be a pleasure if you were able to join us and weigh in on some of these proposed solutions with your peers from other institutions of higher education.  There will be a cocktail reception immediately following.

Panelists:

Amy Bergner, Principal, Mercer Washington Resource Group (WRG)

Martin G. Foster, Executive Vice President and President of Plan Operations, Health Care Service Corporation

Wayne M. Lerner, D.P.H., F.A.C.H.E., President and Chief Executive Officer, Holy Cross Hospital

Mercer Sentinel® Workshop -- Non-Market Risks

Mercer Sentinel invites you to attend our interactive workshop on non-market risks on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 to help institutional investors understand and evaluate non-market risks.  This workshop will focus on helping investors identify operational and implementation risk sources, evaluate the potential impact on investments, and establish a framework for ongoing management and monitoring.

Recent market turbulence has highlighted the potential for non-market risks to translate into realized losses.  Many high-profile frauds and losses go undetected for long periods because investors do not understand the operations supporting their investments from initiation through to performance reporting -- and the required controls surrounding each step along the way.

As investors continue to navigate the enduring financial crisis, they are becoming increasingly aware that losses and costs arise from multiple sources, including operations, lapses of internal controls, and poor execution.  These non-market risks can directly impact economic performance and investment returns.

Mercer Sentinel® is hosting a half day workshop to help investors understand and evaluate non-market risks.  This workshop will focus on helping investors identify risk sources, evaluate the potential impact on investments, and establish a framework for ongoing non-market risk management and monitoring.

Using the life cycle of an investment, we will highlight risks inherent throughout the investment cycle.  The workshop will include:

  • Lessons learned on non-market risks from recent market turmoil
  • Putting your investment management cycle into an understandable operating framework
  • Disaggregating alpha into opportunity risks and excess costs or losses
  • Assessing investment managers' operation and implementation risk

* There is no cost to attend this event.

A Roundtable Discussion on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009

As you may have been following, the recently-passed Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 will have a profound effect on employers because it will enable individuals to file pay-discrimination claims for events that occurred years earlier, exposing employers to additional new risks and making it potentially more difficult to defend claims.

The government is getting more active in the area.  For example, the Ledbetter law comes on the heels of new standards implemented by The Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) for federal contractors in 2006 calling for statistical analysis of compensation to assess liability -- and we anticipate more action.

While past actions cannot be undone, employers can take immediate steps to understand any potential exposure as well as to reduce their present-day and future risks to pay-discrimination claims.

Mercer has taken a leading role in helping organizations on pay equity matters.  Several years ago, Mercer developed a Pay Equity Calculator that determines the distinct "drivers" of pay in an organization and provides a software tool for an employer to identify cases of pay inequities and model the cost of remedy.  Beyond the diagnostic work, we often also help to correct the systematic issues that led to inequities.

* There is no cost to attend this event.

Volatile economy.  Health care politics.  Rising costs.  Many necessities.  Many choices.   These are truly unprecedented times.  But one thing is certain:you, as a leader, will be challenged in 2009 to deal with the impact of it all in your sphere of decision-making.

And because there's so much to consider, we've taken a new twist on our traditional roundtables and have planned a hot topic round-robin - think "speed dating meets benefits" - to share with you leading thinking and fuel for that decision-making.  The objective is for attendees to come away with tangible ideas you can implement.

How It Works

After all of these very focused discussions, we can unwind and mingle during the cocktail reception.

The Great Pension Scare of 2008:  What are Companies Doing to Manage their Retirement Risk in this Haunting Economy?

Equity markets are down over 15% year-to-date... The subprime markets have shaken up the financial services industry and the economy on the whole... The SEC is talking about getting rid of U.S. accounting standards... Unemployment is up for the eighth consecutive month... Gas prices remain at close to all-time highs... The U.S. government is working on the biggest intervention in financial markets since the Great Depression... the ghastly state of the economy in 2008 goes on and on.  Companies are being forced to cut costs, and employees are being forced to save less.  In light of this frightening news, how will companies be managing their retirement risk heading into 2009?

Come hear how plan sponsors are managing risk of their retirement programs  in the current environment, including:

  • Budgeting for 2009
  • Assumptions used for year-end financial reporting
  • Funding policies under PPA
  • Approaches to managing plan assets in down markets
  • 401(k) auto features
  • Getting your employees to save more in their 401(k) plan

Please join us for a facilitated discussion on managing your retirement risks in the current economic environment.  Hear what your peers are doing to manage their retirement programs, what best practices are developing, and what the funded status of your plan might have looked like today if you had adopted a more risk-mitigated approach one year ago.  This will provide an opportunity for you to interact with other plan sponsors and discuss the challenges your company is facing with managing retirement risk today.

A Review of Mercer's National Survey of Employer-Sponsored Health Plans 2007: "Managing Health & Welfare Plans in a Changing Environment"

While you may have seen recent coverage of the survey in the national and local media, that's just the beginning.  At this local seminar, Mercer presented detailed findings for Chicago and the Midwest region, which you can use to benchmark your own program.

In the wake of the National Survey we have conducted a follow-up survey of our Midwest clients that focuses on their strategies and planned program changes for the coming year.  This Health & Benefits Pulse Survey provides a quick snapshot of what is happening in the Midwest and complements the information in our national survey.

Also covered:  An open discussion of how employers are achieving cost reduction and productivity implementation of effective absence management solutions.  Employee absence can cost a business significantly in direct program costs, interrupted workflows and client relationships.  Mercer colleagues discussed findings from our 2007 Health and Productivity Absence Management Survey, as well as strategies for actively managing absences and achieving significant efficiencies and savings.

Burning Issues and Smart Moves for Unprecedented Times

Volatile economy.  Health care politics.  Rising costs.  Many necessities.  Many choices.   These are truly unprecedented times.  But one thing is certain:you, as a leader, will be challenged in 2009 to deal with the impact of it all in your sphere of decision-making.

And because there's so much to consider, we've taken a new twist on our traditional roundtables and have planned a hot topic round-robin - think "speed dating meets benefits" - to share with you leading thinking and fuel for that decision-making.  The objective is for attendees to come away with tangible ideas you can implement.

How It Works

There are four round-robin topics listed below.  You pick three when you register for this event.

When you arrive at the event, we'll give you a personalized itinerary based on your choices.  You will attend a speed-roundtable on each of your topics, during which participants will share their own ideas and experiences.  Each roundtable will be facilitated by a Mercer consultant who specializes in that topic.
